Roha-Miranda et al. 2006: Regarding ecological importance, M. tuberculatus is probably already threatening the native species (Pomacea and Biomphallaria species, for example) of mollusks in the Paranã River basin because in all three rivers with Melanoides occurrences (Crixás, Cana Brava and Macacos) there are no native species of mollusks, which is common in other rivers of the region. These threats occur because of its ability to spread fast and colonize new habitats (natural or man-made). Rader et al. 2011: Some hydrobiid species in the Great Basin have declined (e.g. the desert spring snail, Pyrgulopsis deserta) while a few have gone extinct in the last decade (Hershler 1998, Hershler and Sada 2002). Hershler (1998) suggested that, \"Melanoides tuberculata now thrives in many of the springs of the Great Basin and may be displacing native prosobranch snails here and elsewhere in the west.
