Ecological studies in Florida showed that P. viridis is also detrimental to native fauna, particularly to intertidal oyster reefs, where it displaces adult oysters and reduces the density of juvenile oysters (Baker et al., 2006). Within three years of their appearance in Tampa Bay, Asian green mussels covered several subtidal oyster reefs. The mussels were supported by a matrix of dead oyster shell, and the only living oysters that remained were juveniles that were growing on the shells of the mussels. The impact of the mussels appeared to be even greater on intertidal oyster reefs (Baker et al., 2006).
