The plant climbs and blankets native vegetation, with the weight of the vine often pulling down mature trees. Smothered vegetation also has dramatically reduced light levels to lower layers of vegetation, drastically limiting natural growth and killing many native plants. It is known to have escaped cultivation and spread in the lowland rain forest area of North Queensland in Australia where it can smother rain forest at a rate of about 0.6 ha per year (Humphries et al., 1993), and is considered ‘among the most rapidly growing and destructive weeds in the wet tropics […] mainly of lowland rain forest edges’ (Humphries & Stanton, 1992: 33). In some listed damaged floristic units where the Thumbergia grandiflora species is present, it develops a dense and impenetrable curtain catching a high percentage of the incident light. One of the consequences is the trees‟ inability to complete all of their morphological development.
Large tubers degrade creek and river banks and make destruction of blue thunbergia difficult.
