A comparison of the distributions of the mountain hare and the brown hare in Europe shows that in most places where the latter occurs, the former seems restricted to high altitudes and deep forests.... Competition is inferred because each species of the pair will occupy the preferred habitat of the other in its absence. (Thulin, 2003)
Every time a mountain hare female hybridizes with a brown hare male, the local mountain hare population will lose a species-specific litter. (Thulin, 2003)
